What Types of SSL Certificates Are Available?

SSL certificates are a core component of modern websites. They enable HTTPS and help authenticate website identity, protecting data in transit and supporting user confidence. Certificates can be classified along two separate dimensions: the level of identity validation and the names they cover.
1. Types by validation level
The main validation categories are DV, OV and EV. These categories describe identity checks, not different grades of encryption strength.
DV SSL certificates
For Domain Validation certificates, the CA verifies the applicant’s control of the domain. Supported methods commonly include email, DNS or HTTP file validation.
- Features: Relatively inexpensive, with issuance often possible within minutes after validation.
- Browser display: HTTPS and the browser’s normal connection-security controls; the specific icon depends on the browser.
- Typical uses: Personal websites, blogs, small projects and suitable test environments.
OV SSL certificates
Organization Validation certificates add checks on the organization’s identity and legal existence to domain-control verification.
- Features: Verified organization details provide additional identity information for visitors to inspect.
- Browser display: HTTPS connection indicators and organization details in the certificate viewer.
- Typical uses: Corporate websites, online stores, business applications and organizational websites.
EV SSL certificates
Extended Validation certificates require more extensive organizational checks, including legal status, registration information, physical address and other applicable details, as well as domain validation.
- Features: More detailed organizational identity verification; this does not itself increase the connection’s encryption strength.
- Browser display: Organization information can be inspected in certificate details. The green address bar or directly displayed company name described in the original article reflects older browser interfaces, not a modern EV guarantee.
- Typical uses: Online commerce, banks, financial institutions, large enterprises and services that require stronger organizational identity assurance.
2. Types by domain coverage
Certificates can also be single-domain, wildcard or multi-domain certificates.
Single-domain SSL certificates
A single-domain certificate protects one domain name and enables HTTPS for that name.
- Features: Simple coverage for one name, generally at a lower price.
- Typical uses: Corporate sites, blogs and information sites with one name to protect.
Wildcard SSL certificates
A wildcard certificate protects subdomains at one level beneath a base domain. The base domain itself is covered only if it is also included in the certificate.
- Features: Convenient expansion and management: adding another subdomain at the covered level does not require a separate certificate.
- Typical uses: Corporate sites or larger online stores operating several subdomains.
Wildcards do not cover arbitrarily nested subdomains. For ordinary public DNS names, wildcard coverage is available with appropriate DV/OV products, not EV certificates.
Multi-domain SSL certificates
A multi-domain certificate, also called a SAN certificate, protects several listed names. These may be different base domains or subdomains.
- Features: Consolidates validation work, administration and renewal into fewer certificates.
- Typical uses: Organizations running several brands, business websites or other distinct domains.
